North Pacific rower rescued after activating Kannad Marine SafeLink EPIRB

Charlie MartellKannad Marine has helped save the life of a British  rower, who was successfully rescued 700 miles off  the coast of Japan, after activating his SafeLink EPIRB. 41 year old Charlie Martell, a  Royal Engineer Commando serving with the Territorial Army in Gloucestershire, was 34 days into a solo rowing expedition, travelling 4,500 miles across the North Pacific from Japan to America, when his ocean rowing boat, Blossom, was hit by tropical storm, Mawar. 50ft waves and strong winds damaged a bulkhead on the boat, making it dangerous for him to continue with the expedition. With no help nearby, Charlie took the decision to activate his EPIRB.

Coastguards in Falmouth, Cornwall received the distress signal from the EPIRB, and helped to co-ordinate the rescue. The Falmouth Coastguards were able to check the registered details of the EPIRB, and pass detailed information to the Japenese Coastguards within minutes of the device being activated. Having fast access to this information is vital in the early stages of any search and rescue mission in order to identify the type of vessel in distress and how many people are involved. The Japanese Coastguards were able to alert nearby vessel, MV Last Tycoon of Blossom’s current location, enabling Charlie to be rescued successfully.

Kannad Marine offers a range of emergency location beacon products including EPIRBS, PLBs (Personal Location Beacons), SARTs and AIS SRSs (Survivor Recovery Systems) – must-have devices for all safety conscious sailors.

Kannad Marine’s range of EPIRBs and PLBs are designed to operate with the COSPAS SARSAT satellite system, alerting search and rescue services in the event of an emergency by transmitting a coded message on the 406 MHz distress frequency. The SafeLink EPIRB also includes a built-in GPS receiver ensuring that an accurate position of a casualty is relayed to the rescue services, in turn improving the speed of the recovery by updating the position of the beacon at regular intervals.
