Kannad Marine awards SafeLink SOLO PLB to Leukaemia survivor and solo-sailor, Olly Rofix

Jolly OllyLeading marine distress beacon brand, Kannad Marine, have announced the latest winner of their monthly SafeLink SOLO Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) giveaway competition.

Olly Rofix, from Woodbridge, Suffolk, has survived a very rare form of Leukaemia, and is now sailing around Britain singlehandedly to raise awareness of the Antony Nolan Trust, the charity which helped him to find his life-saving bone marrow donor.
Olly’s 8-month long journey began at St Katherine’s Dock, London, on 28th March; he will be stopping daily at ports en route to promote his cause. Whatever situations he encounters on his voyage, Olly will have peace of mind, knowing that at any time he can alert the search and rescue authorities to his exact location simply by activating his pocket-sized SafeLink SOLO PLB (pictured here).
Olly is undertaking his challenge in an 18ft boat named the Jolly Olly, which he restored from a wreck to a seaworthy craft with help from family and friends. This task provided him with a great incentive whilst recovering from his aggressive Leukaemia treatment. With only two other patients having ever been diagnosed with this exceptionally rare form of cancer, both of whom sadly died, Olly’s battle for survival was an immense feat of determination which lasted several years. It was only when he was put in touch with his bone marrow donor through the Antony Nolan Trust that the light at the end of the tunnel finally appeared, and from there, Olly has made a strong recovery.

Now, as he undertakes this meaningful nautical challenge, Olly says; “I want to encourage other people who have, or have had, serious life threatening setbacks that it is possible to achieve seemingly ‘impossible’ goals. I know from personal experience that having such a goal can be a real incentive to get better. My own goal is to sail around Britain in the Jolly Olly to raise awareness and inspire others to fight against Leukaemia. At the same time, I would also like to recruit as many potential life saving bone marrow donors for the Anthony Nolan Trust as possible, and raise funds in aid of the Trust.”

When the panel of judges at Kannad Marine received Olly’s entry, they had no hesitation in picking him as the winner of this month’s award. Claire Morby, Marketing Co-ordinator for McMurdo Ltd, comments; “Olly’s challenge straight away met one of the key competition criteria - promoting a charitable cause – but it was Olly’s obvious determination and courage in all that he has faced which really made his entry stand out. The SafeLink SOLO PLB is exactly the right piece of safety equipment for Olly to have with him as he undertakes this challenging feat of sailing solo around Britain to raise awareness of an extremely worthwhile cause. Kannad Marine is proud to support such a courageous individual.”
