From 12th January 2012, Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) like the SafeLink SOLO have been permitted for use on land in the UK as well as at sea, following a change in legislation by OFCOM, the government-approved regulatory authority for the broadcasting and telecommunications industries in the United Kingdom.
Whilst the use of PLBs has been permitted in maritime and aviation environments, OFCOM’s published regulations now permit the use of PLBs on land in the UK, which heralds huge progress for the safety of those taking part in outdoor activities around the country.

We seem to be very busy attending events at the moment; a couple of weeks ago we were at METS in Amsterdam, Europe's largest marine electronics trade show; this week our sister brand, McMurdo, has been at Marinetec in Shanghai, the biggest maritime event in Asia. Also this week Kannad Marine is attending the Paris Boatshow, Salon Nautique de Paris. Despite all of the hard work involved in creating marketing material, shipping everything to the location, arranging staff to man the booths and all the other things we need to do, we really do enjoy the opportunity to meet and chat with many of the interesting people who use or want to find out more about our products.
METS (Marine Electronics Trade Show), the largest event of its kind in Europe, has just taken place in Amsterdam. Kannad Marine was represented on a joint stand with McMurdo (its sister brand). The stand was manned by a team of sales and product managers. METS is an opportunity to meet up with all of our European partner distributors and many of our distributors from all around the world, and discuss the marine electronics industry, the year ahead and how we can help our customers with the sales and marketing of our products.
The Safelink R10 although only having been released for sale recently has already generated a lot of interest and positive reviews from sailing magazines and people in the maritime industry. We have really been excited by comments professionals and journalists have been making. Perhaps this is to be expected as it really is an innovative safety product. Designed to be fitted to a life jacket, once activated the Safelink R10 will transmit an alert on an AIS-enabled chart plotter.
On a lovely mid October early morning we found ourselves at Lymington quay waiting to board the boat we had chartered for the day. It was a still and sunny morning, although the shipping forecast was for gale force 8 later on; we were hoping for something in between as the main purpose of the day was to put our new beacons (the SafeLink R10 Survivor Recovery System plus the McMurdo SmartFind S10 Personal AIS Beacon) through their paces in rough weather.
